During the era of golden fleece (of the 1960s), a lot of young Lagosians left the country in their quest for higher education and personal development. Years later, many of them return home to settle down, start new lives as professionals (Engineers, Lawyers, Accountants, Doctors, Surveyors, Architect etc) and contribute to the growth and development of their home town. At this time, the population of Lagos Island with attendants traffic congestion is fast outgrowing available infrastructures. Hence, many working class (who worked on the Island but lived in its suburb) formed the habit of hanging out with friends after work hours to socialise and network. ...This provide ample opportunities for young Lagosians who have family houses around to re-connect with childhood friends and families. At the same time, those who have some things in common (e.g. background, heritage, family ties, experiences etc) fall into groups and clubs. In 1973, the idea of forming a club came up and the name EKO CLUB was adopted among three (3) proposed names (others are Lagos Elite Club and Lagos Social Club). The founding members (who had been contributing portion of their hard earned income) accelerated efforts in formalising the process. Eko Club was founded in 1974 and the adoption of first Constitution as well as the election of its first set of officers took place in January 1975 at the West End Collesium. It is noteworthy that prior to that time, the founding members use to gather at the workshop of Mr S.A. Agoro (Alias Boy-Liverpool) while Mr. M. O. Bioshogun was unanimously adopted as the Protem Chairman until the first election which saw Mr. Rasheed Alaba Williams as the President. At that point in time (January 1975), M.O. Bioshogun was designated ‘First Eko Member” while Alhaji S.A. Agoro was designated “Father of the House”. In 1978, the club was moved to its current site in Surulere with the laying of the first phase of foundation stone of the Club Complex. As at May 1980, the Club has 158 members (which includes the 93 Founding members) commissioning of the ultra-modern (half-a-million naira worth) Club Complex (phase 1) funded with the personal contributions of members.
